M83 Information
M83 is a French electronic music group. The current lineup includes Anthony Gonzalez, Loïc Maurin, Kaela Sinclair, and Joe Berry. Gonzalez was a college freshman when, in the spring of 2001, M83 launched its self-titled 8-track album. Before its reissue by Mute Records in September 2005, it received little recognition outside of Europe. After taking some time off, Gonzalez returned to work on the band's third album, Before the Dawn Heals Us, released in January 2005.
In July 2019, Gonzalez revealed M83's eighth studio album, DSVII (for Digital Shades, Vol. II). The release date was September 20, 2019. Gonzalez stated in December 2021 that he would re-release Hurry Up We're Dreaming on its tenth anniversary. M83's ninth studio album, Fantasy, was released on March 17, 2023, following the release of the lead single "Oceans Niagara" on January 10, 2023. After the album's release, the band toured North America to promote it.
The band's sound is defined by layered guitars and synthesizers, heavy reverb, and soft, dream-pop-influenced vocals. Gonzalez's music has been called "adult-scripted teen dreams," he draws inspiration from '80s pop culture and music. My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Tangerine Dream are just a few of the bands that have influenced his music.
