Loudon Snowden Wainwright III (September 5, 1946) is an American folk singer, songwriter, actor, and comedian from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His music is defined as rock, blues, folk, and comedy. Wainwright grew up in Bedford, New York, and was exposed to music by his father. He cited Tom Lehrer and Stan Freberg as his early influences. Wainwright graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Delaware and began his career in the late 1960s working in a boatyard. He used to play the guitar during his school days; hence, he bought one for himself and wrote his first song, “Edgar.” In one year, he was able to write approximately 20 songs.
Wainwright moved to Boston and New York City to play in folk clubs where Milton Kramer noticed him. Soon he was able to record a deal with Atlantic Records, and in 1970, he released his self-titled album. It was followed by a long list of albums coming out almost every year, such as Album II (1971), Album III (1972), Attempted Mustache (1973), Attempted Mustache (1973), More Love Songs (1986), and Grown Man (1995). He released four live albums, A Live One (1979), Career Moves (1993), The BBC Sessions (1998), and So Damn Happy (2003).
Wainwright appeared in several hit films, including The Slugger’s Wife (1985), 28 Days (2000), Big Fish (2003), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), For Your Consideration (2006), Mosaic (2018), and Knocked Up (2007).
