Los Colognes has been a successful band for the past decade because of their ability to create smart, jam-friendly '70s/'80s rock that honors the legacy of great artists while still searching for a fresh take on their sound. Los Colognes began in 2012 when singer/guitarist Jay Rutherford and drummer Aaron "Mort" Mortenson, who had previously played together in Chicago, moved to Nashville. Longtime bassist Gordon Persha was swayed to join them on this move. The three musicians added twangy, jam-oriented arrangements to Rutherford's smart, somewhat cynical tunes.
The pieces of "The New World" came together in 2020, and the band worked on them the following year. We were open to anything that might free our minds and creatively set us off in a productive direction. The record serves as a time stamp if nothing else. Aaron Mortenson, the band's drummer, and a founding member, says, "I'm glad we decided to create when we didn't know what was on the other side."
