Lithics Information
Portland, Oregon's Lithics give the sounds of predecessors like Bush Tetras, Pylon, and Captain Beefheart a 21st-century shock by extracting the greatest amount of tension from their minimalist post-punk. Their tightly strung rhythms, jabbing, scrabbling guitars, and Aubrey Hornor's surrealistically blank voice and lyrics on 2016's Borrowed Floors represented the unease and despair of the late 2010s.
The band's founder, Hornor, bassist Bob Desaulniers, drummer Wiley Hickson, and guitarist Mason Crumley had been friends for years. They shared bills with their different previous bands on the Portland music scene until they founded Lithics in late 2014. Hornor, who had played guitar as a child but had switched to the drums as an adult, volunteered to take the lead vocal responsibilities for Lithics. The band gradually improved its method, using Hornor's disjointed, bizarre lyrics as a springboard for improvisations that they eventually arranged into songs that continued in the jagged tradition of Kleenex/LiLiPUT, the Fall, and Devo. They independently released the Lithics EP as a limited-edition cassette in July 2015.
In March 2016, Water Wing Records released their self-titled first album, which received plaudits for its innovative approach to tense, combative post-punk. In August 2017, the group self-released Wendy Kraemer, a limited-edition EP demonstrating their jamming prowess. The following year, Lithics changed labels to Kill Rock Stars for their politically charged second full-length, May 2018's Mating Surfaces.
