Laura Veirs Information
Laura Veirs (October 24, 1973) is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition to her work with Neko Case and k.d. lang on the case/lang/veirs project, she is well-known for her solo albums and folk/alternative country concerts. Veirs is the author of a children's book and a podcast host where she discusses parenting and acting. Veirs earned a BA in geology and a minor in Mandarin Chinese from Carleton College in 1997.
She was a translator for a Chinese geological team at the time. Veirs grew up surrounded by various musical genres, including folk-country, classical, and pop, but she didn't begin to "listen seriously" to music until her twenties. Once she got to Carleton, she joined the all-female punk band Rair Kx! After finishing college, she began listening to and appreciating classic country and folk music while living in China.
In 1999, Veirs released an album titled Veirs, on which she played guitar and sang live. Troubled by the Fire was released in 2003 and features seasoned performers, including Bill Frisell. Carbon Glacier followed her signing with Nonesuch. Her European distribution deal with Bella Union was announced at the same time. After that, in August of 2005, came Year of Meteors, which was deemed a "critic's choice" by the New York Times.
