Kool & the Gang is a hit band from Jersey City, New Jersey. The group was founded in 1964 and plays R&B, soul, and funk. Bob "Kool" Bell, his brother Ronald Bell, Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, Bob "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, Woodrow "Woody" Sparrow, and Ricky West are all original members of the band.
The band members have gone through several experiments with various musical genres, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, rock, and pop. The group settled on the name "Kool and the Gang," which they used for their debut album with De-Lite Records in 1969.
Wild and Peaceful (1973) was the band's breakthrough album, with the top 10 hits, including "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging" in the U.S. In 1979, after collaborating with Brazilian artist and producer Eumir Deodato and recruiting singer James "J.T.," Taylor experienced a second commercial high until 1986.
Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and their best-selling album, Emergency (1984), which sold two million copies in the U.S., are some of their most popular albums. Kool and the Gang also received the Marian Anderson Award in 2019.
Perfect Union, the band's 25th studio album and first album of new material in 14 years, was released in 2021. Khalis Bayyan worked on the record up until he passed away in 2020. At the christening ceremony for the Carnival Celebration on November 20, 2022, the band gave a special live performance, fittingly titled "Celebration," to honor the newest ship in the Carnival fleet.
