King Woman Information
Kristina Esfandiari, who now sings for the Bay Area band King Woman, formed the group as a solo effort in 2009 before expanding to include a full band. King Woman has spent the last seven years developing a distinct musical identity that draws from the sublime, melancholy power of doom with the elastic textures and temporality of drone and metallic shoegaze.
The band's debut EP, Doubt (2014's release on the famous San Francisco avant-garde press The Flenser), combined serious themes with melancholy, dark, and hypnotic lyrics. Psychedelic rockers King Woman was discovered and signed to the major independent label Relapse Records in 2016. The first studio album by King Woman, titled Created in the Image of Suffering, will be released through Relapse in February 2017. Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Wreck & Reference, Oathbreaker) produced this album is a masterwork of gloomy, ethereal doom-rock captured at the Atomic Garden.
Created The seven songs on In The Image of Suffering are dark and brooding, conjuring images of a surreal Black Sabbath fronted by Mazzy Star with their disintegrating washes of distorted, billowing distortion and thickly layered psychedelic atmospheres. King Woman's art is accompanied by extremely personal, contemplative lyrics that serve as a release for years of religious and emotional agony.
