King Hannah Information
The Liverpool-based duo Mazzy Star and Portishead are two of the many influences on their alternative rock sound, which dates back to 2017. King Hannah creates soundscapes that are cinematic in scope despite their spare orchestration and austere lyrics. In 2020, they released an EP titled Tell Me Your Mind, and I'll Tell You Mine, using this technique. For their full-length debut, 2022's I'm Not Being Sorry; I Was Just Being Me, they stripped things down even further, allowing the songs more room to breathe.
Welsh native Hannah Merrick was discovered by King Hannah co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Craig Whittle during a university showcase event in Liverpool two years before the band's formation. He made a mental note of her dark, melancholy singing style. They started working at the same bar in 2017, completely by luck. In pre-shift rehearsals, Merrick and Whittle developed King Hannah, with both of them gradually gaining the courage to act in front of each other. Merrick sang lead while he and Whittle played guitar; Whittle was responsible for the band's musical arrangements.
The group attracted the attention of Krista Schimdt at City Slang Records with their self-released track "Crème Brûlée" back in May of this year. She expressed interest in hearing more, and by September 2020, they had signed with the label and republished "Crème Brûlée." The following month saw the release of "Meal Deal." Both songs would appear on that year's Tell Me Your Mind, and I'll Tell You Mine EP.
