Michael Jason Isbell (February 1, 1979) is an American actor, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Green Hill, Alabama. When he was 14 or 15, Isbell began playing in a garage band and a country cover band with his friend and fellow musician, Chris Tompkins. When Isbell was only 16, they performed at the Grand Ole Opry. Isbell received his education at the University of Memphis, where he focused on English and imaginative writing. He had one credit left, so he dropped out to go on the road.
Isbell and the 400 Unit covered "Sad but True" by Metallica for the September 2021 release of the charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist. Weathervanes, the debut album of Isbell and the 400 Unit was released in June 2023 on Isbell's own Southeastern Records label. Isbell made an album with hits like "Deathwish" and "Cast Iron Skillet," from which they gained widespread attention.
Martin Scorsese's epic Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) features Isbell as Bill Smith, a victim of the Osage Indian killings. Isbell was cast in the role in 2021. Bill Smith, the white spouse of a murdered Osage woman, was a victim of the same murder plot that took the lives of so many of her people. On April 6, 2021, it was revealed that Isbell would make his acting debut in the film; fellow country artist Sturgill Simpson was also cast in the project.
