Indigenous Information
Indigenous is an American blues-rock group founded in 1998 in Marty, South Dakota. The band’s music is defined as blues-rock and originally consisted of two brothers Pte and Mato Nanji, and their sister and cousin. The latter two left the band while Charles Sanders II entered as a member. Some of the other past members include Chaney Bryant, Michael Bland, Ray Mehlbaum, Jeremiah Wier, and a few more. Indigenous’ music is highly influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Carlos Santana.
Indigenous has shared the stage with artists of varying musical genres, including Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, B.B. King, Santana, the Indigo Girls, and Jackson Browne. Things We Do was the debut album by the band released in 1998 via Pachyderm Records. The next year, they won three Native American Music Awards for their debut album. They also earned the top two honors: Group of the Year and Album of the Year.
“Now That You’re Gone” was another hit by the group that peaked at number 22 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. The band was named Blues Artist of the Year by Amazon.com. They were also featured on broadcast shows, including NPR’s “All Things Considered,” CBS Saturday Morning, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Some of the other notable discographies by Indigenous include Blues This Morning EP, The Acoustic Sessions (2010), Long Way Home EP, and Gray Skies (2017).
