The Hoodoo Gurus are a rock band that was founded in 1981 in Sydney. The current lineup of the group consists of Dave Faulkner (vocals, keyboards, and guitar), Brad Shepherd (guitar, vocals, and harmonica), Richard Grossman (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Nik Rieth (drums). Hoodoo Gurus has worked with several record labels throughout their career such as Phantom Records, Big Time Records, A&M, Electra, RCA Records, Chrysalis Records, BMG, Zoo/Volcano, Mushroom Records, Acadia/Evangeline, and EMI.
Hoodoo Gurus recorded their first studio album in 1984, entitled Stoneage Romeos. The album stayed at number 1 spot when it was released in the United States in the Alternative/College charts for almost seven weeks. The album became the most played album on the college network that year. Hoodoo Gurus went into the studio to record their second studio album entitled “Mars Needs Guitars!,” released in 1985. The group reached new heights in popularity in the mid-to-late 1980s with their notable albums Magnum Cum Louder and Mars Needs.
Hoodoo Guru released its first live album “Bite the Bullet,” which was released by Mushroom in 1998. The band has released several other notable albums throughout its career, including Kinky (1991), Crank (1994), Blue Cave (1996), Mach Schau (2004), Purity of Essence (2010), and Gravy Train (2014). The band has also won a few awards, such as ARIA Music Awards for Best Cover Art (1993) and ARIA Music Awards for Producer of the Year (1997).
