Guided by Voices Information
Guided by Voices (GBV) is an indie rock band that originated in Dayton, Ohio, in 1983. The group initiated its career as a bar band that used to work with the local scenes. The group moved towards a studio-only orientation by Pollard. The current lineup of the GBV includes Robert Pollard – lead vocals and guitar, Doug Gillard – guitar, backing vocals, Kevin March – drums, backing vocals, Bobby Bare, Jr. – guitar, backing vocals, and Mark Shue – bass, backing vocals. There is a long list of former members, including Mitch Mitchell, Tobin Sprout, Timothy Payton Earick, and many more. GBV has seen frequent personnel changes but always enjoyed the presence of principal songwriter Robert Pollard.
In 1986 GBV debuted the R.E.M. inspired E.P. Forever Since Breakfast. The albums that followed it were Devil Between My Toes 1987, Sandbox 1987, Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia 1989, and Same Place The Fly Got Smashed 1990, Propeller 1992, Vampire on Titus 1993, Bee Thousand 1994, and many more. The band also released many extended plays including The Grand Hour, Static Airplane Jive, Get Out of My Stations, Fast Japanese Spin Cycle, Clown Prince of the Menthol Trailer, I Am a Scientist, Tigerbomb, Sunfish Holy Breakfast, Plantations of Pale Pink, The Pipe Dreams of Instant Prince Whippet, and the list goes on.
The band also performed on the stage of Austin City Limits, broadcast by PBS on November 9, 2004. The last television appearance by the group was on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on December 2, 2004.
