Grant Lee Phillips Information
Grant-Lee Phillips (September 1, 1963) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Stockton, California. After graduating high school at 19, he moved to Los Angeles and tarred roofs to pay for his evening education at UCLA and his time spent playing in bands. Later, he decided not to continue his education and reconnected with an old acquaintance from Stockton named Jeffrey Clark.
Phillips met his future wife, Denise Siegel, at a party in the late 1980s through James Brenner, a fellow student and the first bassist for Shiva Burlesque. Phillips attended art classes on the sly, listened to lectures and watched films at public events, and got involved with the World Music program at the university until 1990. Phillips embarked on a solo career in 2000 when she released Ladies' Love Oracle on the independent label Rounder Records out of Boston.
Later, the recording was made available to a wider audience. In 2001, he released Mobilize, his debut studio album. Phillips played various instruments, and the album received as much acclaim for its softness as Buffalo's rock. Phillips co-produced and co-starred in Elixirs & Remedies, a concert video of the tour shot in Seattle under the direction of Kris Kristensen. The tour was with Robyn Hitchcock. Phillips's "The Sun Shines on Jupiter" from his solo effort "Little Moon" would later have a music video directed by Kristensen.
