Future Islands Information
Future Islands is an American synthpop band. The current lineup of the group includes William Cashion (bass and guitars), Samuel T. Herring (lead vocals and lyrics), Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), and Michael Lowry (drums). Welmers and Herring grew up in Morehead City, North Carolina. They also attended the same middle school. They both became friends in 1998 when studying in 8th grade.
Future Islands recorded its debut album, Wave Like Home, in July 2007. The album was recorded with Chester Endersby Gwazda at Backdoor Skateshop in Greenville. The album was released on August 25, 2008, on Upset The Rhythm. In early 2009, the group toured Europe for the first time. At the time, Future Islands was also working on their second studio album, In Evening Air, which was officially released on May 4, 2010.
In 2010, Future Islands also signed to independent record company Thrill Jockey. The group released its EP entitled The Post Office Chapel Wave in February 2010. On July 7, 2010, the band also recorded an acoustic EP at Mobtown Studios, Baltimore entitled, Undressed. The EP was released for a radio broadcast.
Future Islands released a split 7-inch with the Raleigh band on November 4, 2010, with art designed by Elena Johnston. On October 11, 2011, the band came up with its third studio album entitled, On the Water. Other studio albums that the group has released so far include Singles (March 24, 2014), The Far Field (April 7, 2017), As Long As You Are (October 9, 2020).
