The 1998 album Whitey Ford Sings the Blues by Everlast was a critical and economic success. It sold over three million copies. Everlast, along with producers Dante Ross and John Gamble, created a winning formula for Whitey Ford Sings the Blues by fusing rap with acoustic and electric guitars. While "What It's Like" was the most successful single from the album, "Ends" was the second track to break into the U.S. rock top 10.
After this breakthrough, Everlast teamed up with Santana for the song "Put Your Lights On," which appeared on Santana's Supernatural album 1999. It peaked at No. 8 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached No. 118 on the Pop Singles list. At the 2000 Grammys, "Put Your Lights On" took home the trophy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
Eat at Whitey's (2000), Everlast's follow-up to Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, initially flopped financially in the United States despite the musician's prior success with Santana. But in the end, it was validated as gold. The album also received positive reviews from critics, with Rolling Stone calling it "good" and "great" and making it the magazine's main emphasis for the month.
