Devin Townsend (May 5, 1972) is a Canadian record producer, songwriter, and musician. His full name is Devin Garrett Townsend. He was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, and is also the founder of the Extreme Metal band.
Devin Townsend used to perform in heavy metal bands in his high school before a record label discovered him in 1993. He was asked to perform lead vocals in the album of Steve Vai titled “Sex and Religion.” He, later on, he got discouraged for what he found in the music industry. Townsend accepted it as a challenge and released a solo album, “Heavy is a Heavy Thing.” The solo album was published under the fictitious name Strapping Young Lad. Soon after, he formed a band under this name and released another album in 1997.
Since then, Devin Townsend released solo material under his record label that is known as HevyDevy Records, along with three more studio albums under the name of Strapping Young Lad. A mix of hard rock, ambient, new-age, and progressive metal are his solo albums that have featured a lineup of musicians as support. Including all of his projects and bands so far, he has released twenty-three studio albums and three live albums.
Some of his all-time popular solo albums include Infinity (June 17, 1998), Physicist (June 26, 2000), Terria (November 6, 2001), Empath (March 29, 2019), The Hummer (November 15, 2006), and many others. So far, labels that he has worked with are his own HevyDevy, Inside Out Music, and Century Media.
