Dave Holland Information
Holland, an Englishman born in Wolverhampton, trained himself to play the ukulele, guitar, and bass guitar when he was four. He dropped out of high school at 15 to join a pop band, but his interests eventually led him to jazz. After reading an edition of Down Beat in which Ray Brown was named the best bass player by the magazine's critics, Holland purchased two albums on which Brown played bass alongside Oscar Peterson on piano.
Since the bassist was prominently displayed alongside his instrument on the cover, he also purchased two CDs by Leroy Vinnegar. After only a week of listening to recordings, Holland switched to a double bass. Holland was also inspired by bassists Charles Mingus and Jimmy Garrison, in addition to Brown and Vinnegar.
After relocating to London in 1964, Holland studied under Philharmonia Orchestra and later BBC Symphony Orchestra lead bassist James Edward Merrett while playing double bass in small venues. He was taught sight reading skills by Merrett, who suggested he enroll at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Holland was awarded a full scholarship to attend the program for all three years.
