Dark Star Orchestra Information
The Chicago-based Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead cover songs. As a tribute band, they play music by the Grateful Dead. From the over 2,500 concerts that the Grateful Dead played throughout their 30-year existence, Dark Star Orchestra presents events that showcase the improvisational rock style of the band.
Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish performed with DSO at Martyrs' following their gig in November 1998, just before their first anniversary. Along with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, two original members of the Grateful Dead, John Kadlecik became a member of Furthur in 2009. He made his departure from Dark Star Orchestra official on November 16, 2009.
On December 5, 2009, he played his last concert with the group. He was succeeded by guitarist Jeff Mattson, formerly of the Donna Jean Godchaux Band and the Zen Tricksters, for DSO's 2009–2010 winter performances. Mattson has already solidified his position as DSO's permanent guitarist. Kevin Rosen's departure as bassist was revealed on May 3, 2013. Fall 2022 was the year of the band's 25th-anniversary tour.
