D.O.A. Information
Vancouver, British Columbia, is home to the punk music band D.O.A. Along with Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Angry Samoans, Germs, and Middle Class, they are frequently credited as the "founders" of hardcore punk. Many people consider their second album, 1981's Hardcore, to be the first recording to use the term "hardcore" to describe the music of the second wave of American punk. Joey "Shithead" Keithley, Brian "Wimpy Roy" Goble, and Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery were all in an earlier punk rock band called The Skulls in the Vancouver area.
After their debut performance at Vancouver's Japanese Hall on February 20 of that year, the band fired Harry Homo for his apparent lack of rhythm and replaced him with Keithley. In March of 1978, the band briefly featured a second guitarist named "Randy Romance."
Soon after adding guitarist Brad Kent in June of that year, the band began playing regularly around Vancouver. In the summer of that year, they cut their debut EP, Disco Sucks, containing four original songs, and released it independently. A quick ascent up KUSF's charts at the University of San Francisco led to a tour stop in the Bay Area. Those events at Mabuhay Gardens began in August 1978.
