Cloud Cult Information
Cloud Cult is an American experimental indie rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Scott West (trumpet and visual artist), Connie Minowa (visual artist), Sarah Elhardt-Perbix (trumpet, french horn, and keyboard), Shawn Neary (banjo, trombone, and bass guitar), Daniel Zamzow (cello), Shannon Frid-Rubin (violin), Jeremy Harvey (drums), and Craig Minowa (guitar, singer, and songwriter). In 1995, Craig Minowa formed Cloud Cult by enlisting several musicians to assist with his solo releases. After hearing their early material, numerous record labels expressed interest in signing Cloud Cult, but the band ultimately decided to self-publish instead.
Live painting by Connie Minowa and Scott West became an integral part of their performances as they expanded into performing in front of audiences. Each artist completed an artwork throughout the night that was then auctioned off. Earthology Records was founded in 1997 by lead singer Craig Minowa on his organic farm that ran on geothermal energy and was partly constructed from salvaged wood and plastic. This non-profit label only uses recycled materials and gives 100% of its proceeds to ecological organizations.
The band uses a biodiesel van on its tours. After the sudden death of his two-year-old son Kaidin in 2002, Minowa turned to songwriting as a means of healing. They Live on the Sun debuted at the top of college radio rankings nationwide after its completion in 2003. Cloud Cult recruited bassist Mara Stemm in January 2004 and dropped Aurora Borealis only a few months later.
