Alfred Jesse Smith (July 26, 1941), also known as Brenton Wood, is an American singer and musician. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S. Wood's three biggest hits came in 1967, with "The Oogum Boogum Song" reaching No. 34 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, "Gimme Little Sign" reaching No. 9, and "Baby You Got It" reaching No. 34.
In 1967, Wood's novelty song "The Oogum Boogum Song" was released on Double Shot Records, and it peaked at No. 19 on the U.S. Billboard R&B list and No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"The Oogum Boogum Song'' was a top 10 smash on KGB-FM and a number one hit on KHJ in Southern California. After a few months, "Gimme Little Sign'' became Wood's biggest success, peaking at No. 9 on the U.S. pop chart, No. 19 on the R&B charts, No. 2 on the KHJ, and No. 8 on the U.K. singles chart. It also sold over a million copies and was certified gold.
He has over a dozen singles and seven studio albums under his belt. Many movies, like Colors (1988), have used his songs from the soundtrack. His music has also been used on the soundtracks of television programs, including Beverly Hills and 90210.
Wood has also made a few media appearances, notably in Popdown (1967). Usually, Brenton Wood goes on tour with well-known R&B acts like ZAPP, Stevie B, and McMagic.
