Cass McCombs is an American musician and songwriter. He has put out eleven studio albums, an extended play, and a collection of B-sides under his name since 2002. Americana, underground, country, psychedelic, and even international influences can be heard in McCombs' music. His sarcastic lyrics frequently focus on the gray areas between the individual and the state, the human condition, and the natural world.
A 2016 New York Times article describes McCombs as "one of the great songwriters of his time." McCombs's first EP, Not The Way, was published in 2002 on Monitor Records, followed by his full-length debut, A, in 2003 and his follow-up, Perfection, in 2005 on 4AD. His early work was well-received by critics and fans alike. Dropping the Writ was released in 2007 after McCombs joined with Domino Records.
His career took off after the release of Catacombs (2009), his fourth album, produced by Ariel Rechtshaid and gained widespread praise. It was followed by the releases of two more critically acclaimed albums, Wit's End (2011) and Humor Risk. The double album Big Wheel and Others came out in 2013. According to Spin, it was "a towering achievement." A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, ETC. (2015) was his last album with Domino. NME called McCombs' 2016 ANTI-Records debut, Mangy Love, "McCombs' richest ever recording."
