Cake became a standout band in the 1990s with their unique sound and sharp lyrics. Their big moment came in 1996 when they released the hit song “The Distance.” It was part of their second album, Fashion Nugget, which also included a popular cover of “I Will Survive.” The band mixes rock, funk, country, and even jazz into their songs. They don’t sound like anyone else. Their style includes deadpan vocals, trumpet parts, and catchy guitar riffs. From the beginning, they stood out by keeping things cool, offbeat, and smart.
After their early success, Cake continued to build their fan base. Albums like Comfort Eagle (2001) gave us more well-loved songs like “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.” That track even became the theme song for the TV show Chuck. The band didn’t chase fame but stayed true to their sound. They toured steadily over the years, playing both big festivals and smaller shows. People connected with their clever lyrics and tight live performances. Cake also stayed active in the studio. Their sixth album, Showroom of Compassion, came out in 2011 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2025, Cake is confirmed to perform at the Tailgate N Tallboys Music Festival in Greenfield Park on July 19. They’ll be one of the top acts for the day. This will be one of their rare shows for the year, and fans can expect a full set featuring their classic hits. The band has not announced a new album for 2025, but this festival date is locked in and officially on their tour calendar. If you’re a fan, this is your chance to catch them live this summer.
