Brenton Wood Information
Brenton Wood (July 26, 1941) is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. When Wood was young, his family relocated from Minnesota to San Pedro, a neighborhood of Los Angeles. Brenton spent part of his first year at San Pedro High School before transferring to Compton, where he joined the track team and won numerous awards. After finishing high school, Wood enrolled at East Los Angeles College.
The affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood may have influenced his decision to adopt the stage name Brenton Wood, while he may have also been alluding to Brenton Woods. Brent Records and Wand Records' first few singles were non-charters. After signing with Double Shot Records in the spring of 1967, Wood's novelty tune "The Oogum Boogum Song" climbed to No. 19 on the US Billboard R&B chart and No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
While "The Oogum Boogum Song" only made it into the top 10 on KGB-FM, it went straight to the top on KHJ in Southern California. A few months later, Wood had his biggest hit with "Gimme Little Sign," which peaked at No. 9 on the pop list, No. 19 on the R&B chart, No. 2 on the KHJ, and No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart. It also sold over a million copies and was certified gold. On their 2014 album Epic Endings, he collaborated with William Pilgrim & The All Grown Up to record a new version of the song "Gimme Little Sign." A Kinder Joy candy bars commercial featured "The Oogum Boogum Song" in 2019.
