Benjamin Joseph “Ben” Ottewell (June 23, 1976) is an English singer and songwriter. He was born in Chesterfield, England. Shapes & Shadows, Ben Ottewell’s debut solo album, isn’t a great departure from his work with Gomez, but it does have its differences. It’s acoustic-driven, low-key, and mournful than Gomez. Ottewell’s deep, soulful voice has attracted comparisons to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and artist Tom Waits. In contrast, his lyrical style and acoustic arrangements, particularly his solo work, have drawn comparisons to folk singer Nick Drake.
Ottewell claims that When it came to writing for Rattlebag, he started from scratch, and all of the songs were created exclusively for the album for over a year, giving the album a more coherent feel. He claims to be a firm believer in the riff’s power, not just in the bombastic Zeppelin sense but also in the more cyclical blues or folk licks, and that most of the songs are built around it.
He’d take these ideas to Sam, and we’d finish them after they were created, some as just a lyric, some as virtually full songs. The recording took place in Los Angeles over five days with the help of producer Will Golden, who was also a vital component. We brought in some amazing players and Clay Blair, a fantastic engineer. Since those early Gomez records, it’s the most joy I’ve had in a studio.
