Begonia, dubbed Canada's up-and-coming alt-diva, burst onto the Canadian music scene with the help of her highly regarded 2017 EP Lady In Mind. The indie pop singer has won multiple honors, been praised by the media, and had two songs that peaked at number one on Canada's CBC national radio chart. As Begonia, Alexa Dirks has grown into a glittering supernova who, in the eyes of her followers, is music's best-kept secret.
In September 2019, Begonia released her daring debut full-length album, Fear. An album as intensely personal as Fear is rife with reflections on loneliness, self-doubt, worry, and panic, all wrapped up in that peaceful sense that comes from an artist who has fully accepted both their past and current selves. A close-knit group of collaborators, including Matt Schellenberg and Matt Peters of Royal Canoe and Marcus Paquin, who has previously collaborated with The National, Arcade Fire, and Local Natives, helped her write and co-produce the album.
Fear was longlisted for The Polaris Music Prize and nominated for a Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. It made end-of-year lists from CBC Music and Dominionated and was one of ExclaimMost's Underrated Albums of the Year. "Beats" and "Hanging On A Line" were also recognized among CBC Music's Top 20 Fan Favorites of the year. Additionally, Fear held the top spot on Earshot's Top 50 chart for Canada for ten consecutive weeks. Numerous Netflix and Oprah Winfrey Network shows feature songs from the album, and NPR named Begonia one of the ten Artists You Need to Know.
