Independent folk punk band Apes of the State hails from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. One may describe April's debut release, "All I Did This Summer Was Go to Rehab," as both cringeworthy and brilliant. After leaving her life in New Jersey to begin anew in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, following rehabilitation, she tries her hand at songwriting for the first time. In 2015, the band released a mini-album titled "Things I Never Meant to Tell You," which included tracks that would eventually be incorporated into their full-length album "Apes of the State."
The band's debut album, "This City Isn't Big Enough," was released in 2016, and it was a huge step forward in terms of instrumentation and production value from the band's earlier lo-fi bedroom recordings. They released "Pipe Dream," their second full-length album, in the fall of 2019. The dynamic sound of "Pipe Dream" results from the band's incorporating percussion and electric guitar on certain tunes. Lyrical singer-songwriters like Paul Baribeau and Everyone Except Me heavily influence their music.
Apes of the State mixes the raw energy of a full band with the simplicity and directness of these influences' compositional styles. Their music draws heavily from punk rock, folk, and bluegrass but always develops in new ways. They are an independent group that wants to reach as many people as possible with their music. Love, heartbreak, student loan debt, remorse, and beating addiction are just some of the topics they've written songs about.
