Angela Winbush (January 18, 1955) is an American soul/R&B record producer, musician, singer, and songwriter. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Angela graduated from Northwest High School. She attended Howard University intending to major in architecture and only took up singing as a side gig to make ends meet. She continued to sing in churches during her time at Howard, and she even performed alongside gospel legend Richard Smallwood. As a Howard student, she participated in a vocal group called Hot Tea.
Many well-known acts had them open for them, and they even contributed to albums by singing in the background. In 1986, Benny Medina brought Ronald Isley, lead vocalist of the legendary Isley Brothers, to Winbush after Isley told Medina that he wanted to work with Winbush on a future project. Sheena Easton wrote and produced the hit singles "Without You" and "Fire and Rain," all included on her gold album The Lover in Me, released in 1988. Easton's lower range and deep voice shone through in both tunes.
The Real Thing was Winbush's second solo album, released in 1989. Winbush's "It's the Real Thing," which peaked at number two on the R&B list, extended her top 40 success on the R&B charts, where she had remained a regular despite failed attempts to cross her over to pop listeners.
