Alan Doyle Information
Alan Thomas Doyle CM (May 17, 1969) is a Newfoundlander actor, producer, songwriter, and musician from Petty Harbour. His music is defined as folk-rock, and he is best known as the lead singer of Great Big Sea, a Newfoundland folk-rock band. Doyle was raised in a Roman Catholic family and went to the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s. During university, Doyle met Bob Hallett, Séan McCann, and Darrell Power, who later founded the Great Big Sea.
Before the Great Big Sea was founded, Doyle performed in a duo named Staggering Home with John Brenton. He also played in his uncle’s band, the New Sandells as a teenager. Doyle has been seen in a few notable stage, film, and television productions such as the movie A Whale for the Killing, three episodes of the CBC Television series Republic of Doyle, and Murdoch Mysteries’ tenth season.
Doyle released his debut album entitled Boy on Bridge in 2012, followed by So Let’s Go in 2015 and A Week at the Warehouse in 2017. Rough Side-Out is the only extended play that came out in 2020. Some of his notable songs are “I’ve Seen a Little,” “The Night Loves Us,” “Summer Summer Night,” and “We Don’t Wanna Go Home.” Doyle also composed music for Hatching, Matching and Dispatching, a CBC comedy.
Doyle was announced as a Member of the Order of Canada on June 30, 2017. He also wrote two books entitled Where I Belong in 2014 and A Newfoundlander in Canada: Always Going Somewhere, Always Coming Home in 2017.
