Aimee Mann Information
Aimee Mann (September 8, 1960) is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Richmond, Virginia. She has released over a dozen solo albums and collaborated with various artists over four decades. Her literary lyrics often deal with gloomy themes. In the 1990s, she collaborated with producer Jon Brion, whose work influenced the development of American alternative music. She went to Boston, Massachusetts's Berklee College of Music, for her education.
She started the new wave band 'Til Tuesday and co-wrote their hit track "Voices Carry" in the 1980s after playing in the Young Snakes and Ministry (1985). Due to Mann's desire to pursue a solo career, 'Til Tuesday split up in 1990 after the release of their third album. Whatever was Mann's debut solo album, released in 1993, followed by I'm With Stupid in 1995. Mann and her record label, Geffen, were at odds because of the album's well-received reviews but disappointing sales.
After receiving Oscar and Grammy Award nods for Best Original Song and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, respectively, for her work on the Magnolia (1999) album, Mann became a household name. Mann released her third studio album, Bachelor No. 2, in 2000 under her label, SuperEgo Records, when Geffen declined to do so. It sold well and was well-received by critics, confirming Mann as a serious musician capable of succeeding outside the major label structure.
