Emily Bront's Wuthering Heights was first published under the alias "Ellis Bell" in 1847. The Earnshaws and the Lintons, both West Yorkshire landed aristocracy members, and their foster son Heathcliff are at the center of the story. Romanticism and Gothic literature served as inspirations for the work.
Contemporary assessments of Wuthering Heights were divided despite the novel's current status as one of the finest works of English literature. Its images of mental and physical violence, including domestic abuse, as well as its criticisms of Victorian morality, religion, and the class system, caused quite a stir.
Before Charlotte Bront's novel Jane Eyre became popular, publisher Thomas Newby accepted Anne Bront's Agnes Grey and Emily Bront's Wuthering Heights for publication. Emily's death in 1848 prompted Charlotte to modify and release a new edition of Wuthering Heights in 1850. It has spawned numerous adaptations in other media, including a song by English singer-songwriter Kate Bush.
