Hadestown Information
The Broadway musical Hadestown tells the story of two people who fall in love while living in extreme poverty. It was written by Anais Mitchell and first performed in Barre in 2006. That's after performances in 2007 across Vermont and Massachusetts, after a production that opened in Vergennes earlier that year.
Doubtful of the musical's viability, Mitchell transformed it into a concept CD and published it in 2010. After meeting director Rachel Chavkin two years later, she rewrote the musical and produced it on stage with new songs and more dialogue.
On May 6, 2016, Chavkin directed the premiere of Hadestown at the NY Theatre Workshop, an off-Broadway venue. It lasted till the end of July. After successful runs in Edmonton and London, the musical made its Broadway debut in previews in March 2019.
The opening night of the Broadway play was met with praise from critics, and the show went on to win many prizes and honors. Hadestown was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, among the most of any show, and took home eight of them, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
