WonderCon Information
The annual WonderCon celebrates science fiction, fantasy, comic books, and movies. Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff, and Mike Friedrich, his business partner, ran the event for 15 years. They negotiated with the San Diego Comic-Con International's management in 2001 to join the Comic-Con International family of conventions.
This increased the San Francisco convention's visibility and made it a prime location for sneak peeks at upcoming blockbuster films, especially those based on comic books. Among these are Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four, Superman Returns, 300, Watchmen, and Kickass, all released between 2004 and 2010. These screenings were followed by Q&A sessions with the film's stars. From 2009 to 2010, WonderCon grew from 34,000 to 39,000. In 2011, it topped out at 49,500.
Since San Francisco's Moscone Center was undergoing renovations following the 2011 convention, the event had to move out of the Bay Area. In 2012, the event was relocated to Anaheim and renamed WonderCon Anaheim to reflect its new location. The 2016 WonderCon, now known as WonderCon Los Angeles, took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from March 25-27. The 2017 conference, which took place from March 31 to April 2, made its annual return to Anaheim.
