The play's title is taken from the name of a character's cat, rumored to be a familiar spirit. The character was likely influenced by Elizabeth Clarke, who was tried and executed for witchcraft in Essex in 1645. Churchill's play, influenced by the Equal Pay Act of 1970, examined the inequality of treatment between males and women in England, both in the 17th century and the present day.
