The Wedding Singer, the musical, made its world premiere at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre for a short run before it opened on Broadway. The run at the 5th Avenue Theatre began on February 8, 2006 (with previews beginning on January 31) and closed on the 19th of the same month. After previews began on March 30, 2006, the official opening night was April 27 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway. The musical ran for 284 performances before closing on December 31, 2006.
Stephen Lynch played Robbie in this production, directed by John Rando and featuring choreography by Rob Ashford. The Curtis M. Phillips Center in Gainesville, Florida, hosted a preview performance on August 31, 2007, while the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama, hosted the official opening on September 4, 2007. The tour concluded on August 31, 2008, at Harrah's in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after 31 stops.
Tour director Paul Stancato was inspired by John Rando's Broadway directing and choreographer Chris Bailey was inspired by Rob Ashford's Broadway work. Starting in February 2008 at the Manchester Palace Theatre with Jonathan Wilkes as Robbie and Natalie Casey as Julia, a UK tour ran through July of that year.
