The Rose Tattoo is a Tennessee Williams play that was opened on Broadway in February 1951. Its film adaptation was released later on in 1955. The story of the game is based upon an Italian-American widow who lives in Mississippi. She allowed herself to pull out from the world after her husband’s death, also expecting the same from her daughter.
Stars who acted originally in the Broadway include Eli Wallach, Maureen Stapleton, and Phyllis Love. Other cast members include Vivian Nathan and Martin Balsan. Premier of The Rose Tattoo was featured on February 3, 1951, at the Martin Beck Theatre, now known as Al Hirschfield Theatre. It deduced over 306 performances till October 27, 1951.
Cheryl Crawford was the producer of The Rose Tattoo, Tennessee Williams performed his job as a writer, which he did a great job, music by David Diamond, Daniel Mann took care of all the stage arrangements whereas scenic designs were by Boris Aronson.
In 1966, the play revived with the star performers Maria Tucci replaced by Phyllis Love for the role of Rose Delle Rose and again by Maureen Stapleton. Tucci got a big round of claps after her performance in the play, getting nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. Revival went for over 50 days from November 9 to December 31. The revival took place at the Billy Rose Theatre, now known as the Nederlander Theatre.
In 1951, the play won the Tony Award in the “Best Play” category and again in 1995 for the “Best Revival of a Play.”
