American poet and author Edgar Allan Poe is known for his narrative poem "The Raven." The poem has been celebrated since its initial publication in January 1845 for its otherworldly tone, melody, and stylized language. A grieving lover receives an unexpected visit from a mysterious talking raven. The student-identified lover is mourning the loss of his Lenore. The raven, perched on a statue of Pallas, seems to aggravate matters by constantly crowing "Nevermore." The poem draws from various sources, including folklore, mythology, religion, and classical literature.
According to his follow-up essay from 1846 titled "The Philosophy of Composition," Poe insisted that he had composed the poem systematically and rationally, intending to produce a poem that would satisfy both critical and popular tastes. The poem was partially motivated by the character of the talking raven in Charles Dickens's Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty. Poe modeled the intricate rhythm and meter after Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship," drawing inspiration from the work's use of internal rhyme and alliteration.
