Agatha Christie wrote the murder-mystery play The Mousetrap which debuted on London's West End in 1952 and remained in production until March 16, 2020. After that, it reopened on May 17, 2021. The 27,500th performance of this play, which has been on the West End for the longest time in history, took place on September 18, 2018. The audience is generally urged not to reveal the play's twist finale after leaving the theatre.
The brief radio drama that later became the play was created as a birthday gift for Queen Mary, King George V's wife. Three Blind Mice, featuring Barry Morse, was the name of the telecast on May 30, 1947. The novel was inspired by the true tragedy of Dennis O'Neill, who was severely abused while being raised by a Shropshire farmer and his wife.
The play is based on a short story, which was itself based on the radio drama. Christie requested that the narrative not be published while the play was performed in London's West End. Although the short tale has yet to be published in the UK, it did so in the US in the 1950 book Three Blind Mice and Other Stories.
