The Miser Information
Molière's The Miser is a five-act prose farce set in Renaissance France. On September 9, 1668, it had its world premiere at the Palais-Royal Theater in Paris. The drama was first performed in 1668, and adaptations quickly followed across Europe. In 1670, a German edition, Der Geizige, was published in Frankfurt. In 1672, Thomas Shadwell reworked Molière's play into "The Miser" for an English audience. Henry Fielding, in 1732, created an even more well-known adaptation based on both Plautus and Molière.
Misers were often portrayed in Italian commedia dell'arte as the character of Pantaleone, a wealthy and greedy trader from Venice. The drama by Molière was, however, reworked into an opera. The play's libretto, written by Giovanni Bertati, was first put to music in 1775 by Pasquale Anfossi under the title L'avaro and then again in 1776 by Gennaro Astarita.
In 1814, Giacomo Cordella set a libretto by Giuseppe Palomba based on the poem. Also in Russia, in the 18th century, Vasily Pashkevich adapted Molière's drama into a comic opera called The Miser. The Lebanese musician Marun Al Naqqash (1817–1955) popularized another instrumental adaptation of Arabic music, al–Bakhil. In 1847, Beirut hosted this event.
