The Mikado Information
Their ninth of fourteen operatic collaborations is the two-act comedic opera The Mikado, or The Town of Titipu, with music by Arthur Sullivan and lyrics by W. S. Gilbert. It premiered on 14 March 1885 in London at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 672 performances, making it one of the longest-running shows of all time and the second-longest run for a musical. At least 150 companies in Europe and the United States were putting out the opera at its close in 1885.
Amateur and student productions of The Mikado have made it one of the most widely performed operas by the Savoy Opera Company. One of the most performed pieces of musical theater ever written, this work has been translated into dozens of languages. Gilbert could more freely satirize British politics and institutions by setting the opera in Japan, an exotic country remote from Britain.
Gilbert set some of his operas in exotic or made-up locations, such as The Mikado, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Utopia, Limited, and The Grand Duke, to lessen the severity of his satire of British institutions. Some American opera stagings have been criticized since the 1990s for perpetuating harmful stereotypes about East Asians.
