The Bands Visit Information
The Band’s Visit is a stage musical that was opened on November 27, on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Its lyrics and music are done by David Yezbek, whereas the book by Itamar Moses. The National Endowment for the Arts, The Laurent/Hatcher Foundation, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s and National Funds for New Musicals supported the production and development of the Band’s Visit. David Cromer was the director of the musical, and Patrick McCollum did the choreography.
On June 25, 2019, the first national tour of the musical began at the Providence Performing Arts Centre, in Providence (Rhode Island).
Overture, Welcome to Nowhere, Waiting, It Is What It Is, Soraya, Papi Hears the Ocean, Omar Sharif, Beat of Your Heart, Something Different, The Concert, Answer Me, Haled’s Song About Love, Itgara’a, Iztik’s Lullaby, Haj Butrus, and Waiting are some of the notable musical numbers of the Band’s Visit.
It was the winner to Drama Desk Awards for the Outstanding category Director of the Musical, Lucille Lortel Awards for the category Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical, New York Drama Critic Circle Award for the categories Best Musical and Outstanding musical, and Outer Critics Circle Award for the category Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.
Not only this, but it won the Theatre World Award for the category Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence in the Theater and an Obie Award for the categories Obie Award for Musical Theatre and Obie Award for Directing in 2017. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre in 2019.
The Band’s Visit was nominated for Drama League awards for the category of Outstanding Performance of a Broadway or off-Broadway Musical. This show crafted a positive impact on the actors and audiences of the Middle-East due to the reason that the characters represented were authentic, and none was the negative stereotype.
