Two brothers and three sisters comprise the 5 Browns, a classical piano quintet. Classics like Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, and In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg sit alongside more obscure pieces by composers like Nico Muhly and John Novacek. The 5 Browns perform and record music for five pianos, solo piano, two pianos, and other combinations.
The five Brown children attended the Juilliard School in New York City from 2001 to 2006, taught by Yoheved Kaplinsky. When all five of them enlisted simultaneously, they made history. The "Fab Five" moniker appeared in People magazine in February 2002, while they were featured on Oprah and 60 Minutes. The 5 Browns have had three consecutive number-one classical albums on Billboard's album chart. The reviews of their performances have been overwhelmingly positive.
They were signed to RCA Red Seal (which became Sony BMG Masterworks) from 2004 to 2008, but they switched to E1 Music for their 2010 album, The 5 Browns in Hollywood. The Browns, a family of five musicians, are Steinway Artists.
