Teatro Avante Information
A nonprofit theatrical company called Teatro Avante is situated in Miami, Florida's Little Havana district. Mario Ernesto Sánchez established Teatro Avante in 1978 to conserve Hispanic theater and culture. Sánchez claims that Teatro Avante was established to give Spanish-language art theater in Miami a place to perform. The first play the organization produced was Electra Garrigó by Cuban dramatist Virgilio Piera.
A yearly theater festival, initially known as the Festival of Hispanic Theatre, was first organized and produced by Teatro Avante in 1986. Four years later, the festival's focus was broadened, and Miami's International Hispanic Theater Festival was born. In its most recent incarnation, the festival featured Peruvian drama. It was held in association with the Teatro Prometeo of Miami-Dade College and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
Additionally, Teatro Avante has represented the United States at international theatrical competitions. In 2009, the company resided at Spain's Festival de Teatro de Villa de Molina. The plays produced by Teatro Avante range from classics to original works. They make their stage debuts each year at the Miami International Hispanic Theatre Festival. En ningn lugar del mondo (Nowhere in the World), a play by Cuban playwright Abel González Melo, had its world premiere in 2018 at Teatro Avante.
