Take Me Out - The Play Information
Take Me Out is a play by American playwright Richard Greenberg. After staging at the It opened Off-Broadway on September 5, 2002, at the Joseph Papp Public Theater, following a run at London's Donmar Warehouse. After opening on Broadway on February 27, 2003, at the Walter Kerr Theatre, it received the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play and ran for 355 performances.
The only Major League Baseball players to ever come out publicly during their careers were Glenn Burke in the 1970s (to teammates and team owners) and Billy Bean in 1999 (after retiring from playing for eight seasons). This play imagines what the aftermath of such a catastrophe may be like through dramatization.
After following the 1999 New York Yankees' (then-)record 114-win season, which began with David Wells' perfect game, playwright Greenberg claims he felt compelled to write a baseball drama. Many people think that Derek Jeter, formerly of the New York Yankees, was the model for Lemming and that John Rocker, formerly of the Atlanta Braves, inspired racist pitcher Shane Mungitt.
