Spring Awakening Information
Steven Sater wrote the book and lyrics for the coming-of-age rock musical Spring Awakening, featuring Duncan Sheik's music. It is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 German play Spring Awakening. The musical, which takes place in late 19th-century Germany, is about young people coming to terms with the inner and exterior turmoil of adolescent sexuality. Alternative rock is incorporated into music as a component of the folk-influenced rock score.
The first Broadway production of Spring Awakening debuted at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006, following its creation in the late 1990s, numerous workshops, concerts, rewrites, and its Off-Broadway debut. Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr. were among the actors, and choreographer Bill T. Jones and director Michael Mayer made up the creative team. Eight Tony Awards were given to the original Broadway production, including ones for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and Featured Actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, and the Grammy Award for best cast album went to the original cast recording. In addition, the production was revived in 2015 on Broadway and received several accolades, including three Tony Awards nominations.
Many subsequent performances have been inspired by the Broadway show's success, including numerous in the United States, a West End production that won four Laurence Olivier Awards, Best New Musical, and several productions abroad. An HBO documentary on the 15-year reunion of the original company, Spring Awakening: Those You've Known, was released in 2022.
