Ruddigore Information
Originally titled Ruddygore, Ruddigore, or, The Witch's Curse is a comedic opera composed by Arthur Sullivan and written by W. S. Gilbert. It's the tenth of Gilbert and Sullivan's fourteen comedic operas and one of the Savoy Operas. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company debuted it at London's Savoy Theatre on January 22, 1887.
Critics and the opening night crowd both believed that Ruddygore (in its original spelling) fell short of the standards set by The Mikado. There was a total of 288 shows after some tweaks were made, such as changing the title. The article made money and received mixed but positive feedback. The Illustrated London News wrote, "Sir Arthur Sullivan has eminently succeeded alike in the expression of refined sentiment and comic humor." This was said of both Gilbert and Sullivan. When it comes to the former, nothing beats the allure of a graceful melody, while when it comes to the latter, even the music of the most grotesque circumstances exudes a sense of humor.
When Rupert D'Oyly Carte brought Ruddigore back after World War I, he made several cuts and additions (including a new introduction). Even though it never became a moneymaker, it was included in the company's repertory until its demise in 1982. In honor of the opera's 100th anniversary, Sadler's Wells in London staged a production nearly identical to the first performance.
