Noises Off Information
Noises Off was written by Michael Frayn in 1982. It was inspired by his experiences working behind the scenes on the play The Two of Us, which was performed in 1970. Frayn intended to create something in which the audience watches a cast of vibrant individuals trying to present a play from a backstage viewpoint, as he believed it would be more exciting to see a drama from behind.
Originally a 1977 one-act drama named Exits, renowned producer Michael Codron was so delighted with the work that Frayn personally urged him to extend it. The outcome was Noises Off, named for a phrase usually used in stage directing to demand quiet in the wings. Starring Patricia Routledge and Paul Eddington, the piece opened in London at the Lyric Theatre in 1982. Rave reviews for Noises Off won them the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy.
Since then, the comedy has been a mainstay of professional theater troupes and has had several film adaptations and revivals. The initial Broadway show from 1984 took first place in the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.
