Mummenschanz Information
The Mummenschanz Mask Theater was established in 1972 after three years of experimentation and study with Jacques Lecoq in Paris and Roy Bosier in Rome. After a successful 1973 tour of the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America, Mummenschanz opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for three years (1977-1980), totaling 1,326 performances.
The New Show premiered at New York's Helen Hayes Theatre in 1986. Chris Elliott made a spoof of them at that time on Late Night with David Letterman. The Muppet Show's first season finale, taped in November 1976, featured them as special guests. In 1980, the group's television performance of La Pomme was honored with the Rose d'Or.
They made an appearance on the Muppet Show. Northern Exposure (1990) and 3-2-1 Contact (1980) also featured them. They appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show on February 6, 1986. When Double (including Herb Alpert on trumpet) released their award-winning music video for "Devil's Ball" in 1987, Mummenschanz was a featured performer.
