Mountainfilm Information
Mountainfilm is a documentary film festival that is held every Memorial Day weekend since 1979. The festival showcases nonfiction stories about cultural, environmental, climbing, political, and social justice issues in Telluride, Colorado. The documentaries and Mountainfilm bring together world-class athletes, artists, and change-makers via interactive discussions, a gallery walk, an all-day symposium, free community events, outdoor programming, and presentations. The festival aims to educate, motivate, and inspire audiences to a considerable extent.
The motto of Mountainfilm is "Celebrating Indomitable Spirit." Mountainfilm started in 1979 when Telluride was completing its transition from a hard-rock gold and silver mining community to a ski town and destination resort. The event has also added Mountainfilm for Students, which is an educational component for schools across the country. The festival also funds Mountainfilm Commitment Grants, which provides annual grants for photographers, artists, filmmakers, and adventurers.
The individuals are granted the award based on the alignment of their projects to the organization's mission; to use the power of art, film, and ideas. Mountainfilm has hosted a significant amount of speakers to date such as Galen Rowell, George Schaller, Phil Borges, Bill McKibben, Chris Sharma, Wade Davis, Martin Litton, James Balog, Maurice Herzog, Sandra Steingraber, Sir Edmund Hillary, Richard Holbrooke, Pete Athans, Timmy O'Neill, Subhankar Banerjee, John Grunsfeld, Angela Fisher, Rick Ridgeway, and many more.
Mountainfilm on Tour presents over 150 shows per year worldwide since 2000, with around 65,000 people in attendance. The founders of Mountainfilm include Royal Robbins, Lito Tejada-Flores, Bob Craig, and Telluride local Bill Kees.
