King Lear Information
Shakespeare's King Lear is a tragedy. Leir of Britain is the inspiration for this mythical creature. King Lear prepares for his death by dividing his kingdom and authority between two of his daughters. He spirals into poverty, madness, and the forbidden center of political maneuverings. On Saint Stephen's Day in 1606, the first recorded performance of any version of a play by William Shakespeare took place.
Modern editions are based on the 1608 quarto (Q1), the 1619 quarto (Q2, unauthorized and based on Q1), and the 1623 First Folio, all of which are still in existence. There are major changes between the folio and quarto editions. After the English Restoration, the play's gloomy and depressing tone was altered several times to appeal to a wider audience. Still, since the nineteenth century, the original version of the play has been recognized as one of Shakespeare's greatest works.
The drama has been adapted extensively, and renowned actors have sought after both the title character and supporting roles. King Lear is universally recognized as a masterpiece of literature, with Percy Bysshe Shelley hailing it as "the perfect specimen of the dramatic art existing in the world" in A Defence of Poetry.
